Hawaiian Language

 

There are 13 letters in the alphabet.  This includes 8 consonants and 5 vowels. 

Consonants - H K L M N P W ' (okina)

Vowels - A E I O U

Vowels are pronounced like in the Spanish language.  The 'okina which is considered a consanant is very important.  Depending on the placement it can change the whole meaning of a word such as, ko'u (my) and kou (your).  The W in most words are prounced with a V sound such as haWaii.  The W in Hawaii is actually pronounced like HaVaii.

wahine: female

kane: male

ono: delicious

pua: flower

lei: necklace

mu'umu'u: Hawaiian dress

seven: ehiku

eight: ewalu

nine: eiwa

ten: umi

Monday: Po'akahi

Tuesday: Po'alua

Wednesday: Po'akolu

Thursday: Po'aha

Friday: Po'alima
