all this and more at Honolulu’s 24th Annual
Pan-Pacific Festival Matsuri in Hawaii, set for
June 11-13, 2004
As many as 4,000
musicians, dancers and artists from Japan will
join scores of their peers in Hawaii to present a
variety of entertaining events.
Since its
inception in 1980, the mission of the Pan-Pacific
Festival Matsuri in Hawaii has been to promote
intercultural friendship and overcome language and
geographic barriers through shared interests.
Today, the festival is one of Hawaii's largest
cultural events.
 Merrie
Monarch Royal Parade
Since 1963, the city of Hilo has
celebrated the week-long Merrie Monarch hula
festival during the third week of April. The
festival's centerpiece is a royal parade down the
main street in honor of the "Merrie Monarch"
himself, King David Kalakaua. He was largely
responsible for the revival of hula
following decades of missionary disapproval, when,
at the time of his coronation in February 1883, he
staged a performance of women dancers and male
drummers on the lawns of Honolulu's 'Iolani
Palace. The Merrie Monarch Royal Parade takes
place during the week of the festival.
